PLAYLIST TRADITIONS DECEMBER 27, 2009

Any comments, queries, requests please e mail wfdutraditions@aol.com

This was our annual look back at the year for our choices---only ours and perhaps not yours--of this year's 20 favorite recordings. 10 by yours truly and 10 by Ron Olesko. It was hard to choose just 10 because there were quite a few others that were truly wonderful. We also paid tribute to those we lost this year and closed with some year end music and our hopes for a very happy, healthy and peaceful new year for us all.

Now--a video and also a picture to put with the voices of today.

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA DECEMBER 27, 2009

Any comments, queries, requests please e mail sundaysimcha@yahoo.com

Congratulations to the winners of CDs from prior programming. These are in the mail for you as this is being written.

The last program for this year so a bit of nostalgia was called for along with a few requests and, now, if you will permit me a few brief year end comments. The show has been on now, thanks to your loyal support, for almost 5 years and as the time has progressed I have tried to mix or meld newer material to partner with the older and much expected and loved material. A note on the e mail address re-enforced my belief that we have to move in a direction that encompasses more than just the old traditional Yiddish material but combine it with a more modern and ecumenical bit of programming. Broaden our horizons, so to speak. The e mail I received was from a young listener in Brooklyn who was happy to "discover" The Weavers. I assume some other artists in the "Yiddishkeit" vein or with messages that are universal in their sentiments---such as a song by Kate Campbell which speaks to the universality of The Old Testament and relates it to today's struggles for all. I will save that for Passover.

Next week I hope you will be tuning in for an entire hour of Comedy Corner as presented by THE CAPITOL STEPS .
You may be aware, or not, that I have been able to obtain the exclusive presentations of their quarterly brilliant, topical, satirical, and brilliant work for WFDU in this area and, happily, we are able to present it as part of Sunday Simcha---tell your friends who may like more than the "Yiddishkeit" we do and let them discover that as well.

Now for a few pictures to put a face to the voices but first---a short video of music by Seymour Reichtzeit who preceded my humble comments of broadening of horizons:

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA December 20, 2009

Any comments, queries, requests, and kvetchhing are always welcome by e mail to sundaysimcha@yahoo.com

Hopefully you all enjoyed today's nostalgic program and a brilliant piece of seasonal humor from The Capitol Steps---which are exclusive in this area to WFDU and Sunday Simcha in their quarterly presentations. A good mix since Yiddishkeit and humor are, among other things, synonymous.

A few pictures to put a face with the music and a video so that you can see The Capitol Steps on stage which is where they will be in our area on February 19 at Town Hall in NYC.

A small sampling of what is in store----trust me---there is plenty more skewering in good taste going on and your thoughts will be provoked in a comedic way.

For any comments, queries, requests please e mail wfdutraditions@yahoo.com

The year is winding down and on December 27 Ron Olesko and I will be reviewing the year in music on Traditions and also remembering those we have lost this year. I was delighted with the complimentary calls today and my heartfelt thanks for them as well my congratulations to the winners of various CDs as well as my thanks to the artists for supplying them.

Now, a few pictures to put with some of the voices you heard today as well a video of one of the artists on today's program---but we start with a video from a DVD available at the Red Rock Rondo website . This is a small portion of a wonderful musical presentation of their music on the Utah PBS station a while back and once again proves never judge a book by its cover:

PLAYLIST SUNDAY SIMCHA December 6, 2009

For any comments, queries, requests, and, of course, general kvetching, please e mail sundaysimcha@yahoo.com
Those of you who asked where you might hear some of the songs again---we are are archived at http://www.wfdu.fm/ for 2 weeks. Just check it out and enjoy.
Let me urge you to tune in next week for our Hanukkah--Chanukah---any spelling you like---show for this minor holiday that has been elevated to heights, as Kwanza (whatever that is) to compete with the merchandising madness of Christmas. Which is what it is all about and will be addressed in song next week ---along with a comment of my desire to have the miracle of the oil visit me when I fill up my gas tank and it lasts 8 times longer than it should.
Now a few pictures to put a face to the voices this week---but first a salute to the show that follows us on the "Eclectic Wknd Sound" of WFDU via video---Allan Sherman---he does start with The Beatles--- after that---just laugh a bit; you need it.
